OVERVIEW
Empowering Nevada’s Education Community
In 2024, I led a full rebuild of Great Schools. All Kids. into School Scout Nevada, an easy-to-use platform for Nevada public-school performance. The legacy site was slow, cluttered, and not mobile-friendly, making data hard to find and even harder to trust.
MY ROLE
As Lead Product Designer, I owned the end-to-end user experience from stakeholder interviews to Figma prototypes to user acceptance testing. Additionally, in my moonlighting role as Creative Director, I developed the full visual identity.

THE SITUATION
Varied User Problems
Nevada state education data is used by parents, policymakers, educators, and community advocates, each approaching it with different questions and needs. Through stakeholder conversations with each audience group, we uncovered shared frustrations with the old system: missing essential features, inaccessible visuals, and a lack of guidance for what the data actually meant.

INSIGHTS
Starting From Purpose
By organizing needs and data points into these three mental models, we uncovered a clear pattern across audiences: they weren’t starting from data, they were starting from purpose. This exercise helped validate our IA approach and later informed the navigation framework: first anchoring a school’s location and context, then clarifying school type, and finally surfacing performance indicators in a way that feels progressively more meaningful rather than overwhelming.
SOLUTION
We redesigned the school search to include refined filters for school location, context, and type, which help users quickly find relevant information. The optimized layout works seamlessly on desktop and mobile, and the new school comparison widget lets users compare schools without disrupting their browsing experience. This streamlined approach enables faster, more informed decision-making without cluttering the interface.

Simplifying Data Through Thoughtful Design
We began by focusing on the core user experience with mockups for key content pages, ensuring the design was both functional and visually aligned with the new brand identity. This approach allowed us to establish a seamless navigation experience across both mobile and desktop platforms.
Turning Complexity into Clarity
The feature pages were designed to make complex educational data more accessible and actionable for users. Key features like the School Profile page, and data such as Equity Act data, and year-over-year comparison were integrated to help families, educators, and school leaders better understand and assess school performance.

Real Results for Nevada’s Families
The client was thrilled with the results and received high praise while demoing the site at Nevada state educational events. Families, educators, and legislators alike have found the site far more intuitive and easy to navigate, noting that it empowers them with quick access to essential data for making informed decisions.
Our database rebuild empowered the client’s team to make updates effortlessly, streamlining their internal processes. Now, key team members no longer need to build reports for legislators from scratch, greatly improving their workflow and saving valuable time—an enhancement they greatly appreciated.
The Process
Engage with key internal stakeholders to gain insights into the target audiences—families, students, educators, legislators, and community members—and understand their specific data needs.
Launch and deploy the website and database ahead of key legislative sessions to support government and other data-driven decision-makers.
